August through October has historically been the weakest stretch of the year for U.S. stocks, with safe-haven assets such as gold, the U.S. dollar and U.S. Treasurys tending to outperform during that period, according to Bank of America head of technical strategy Paul Ciana. Ciana said the S&P 500’s average return from August to October since 1928 was -0.02%, essentially flat, and its average drawdown of 7.35% was the largest among any three-month period. He added that this does not signal the end of the long-term uptrend, while November through January has traditionally been a strong period, with average gains of 3.54%.

Thirty-one new vulnerabilities have been found at major service providers supporting "x402," an HTTP-based cryptocurrency payment standard, CryptoSlate reported. The study covered 15 companies accounting for 99% of all transactions and found that every provider violated payment verification and settlement rules. The vulnerabilities fell into four categories: unauthorized use, asset theft, denial of service, and gas fee abuse. Researchers also confirmed two cases of unauthorized use, described as "Free shopping," that exploited a gap allowing services to be provided before settlement was completed. Major providers including Coinbase and PayAI acknowledged the vulnerabilities and began remediation work. The researchers urged merchants not to rely only on pre-verification and instead provide services only after final settlement is confirmed or adopt explicit rollback logic.

A shakeout appears to be underway in the centralized crypto exchange sector after BitMart and BitMEX announced business shutdowns in quick succession, BeInCrypto reported. The outlet said BitMart began winding down operations on July 26, three days after BitMEX announced its withdrawal, and the number of exchanges shutting down in July rose to three including AscendEX. Industry watchers see the prolonged bear market, a decline in retail altcoin investors, shrinking futures trading volume, tighter regulation and high operating costs as factors driving closures among small and mid-sized exchanges. The market may later be reorganized around regulation-compliant exchanges and institutional capital, while raising concerns that power could become concentrated in a small number of venues. BeInCrypto added that the latest closures do not necessarily signal a market bottom, with macroeconomics, liquidity, regulation and investment demand still remaining key variables for the next upcycle.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich said Strategy’s Bitcoin acquisition strategy has not changed in its fundamental structure or logic. Gerovich said that when a software company with a market capitalization of about $1 billion added $250 million worth of Bitcoin to its balance sheet in August 2020, most people saw it as a one-off event. When the stock later rose 10-fold, he said, it was praised as a visionary move, and when it later fell nearly 90%, it was dismissed as a failed experiment. Despite those repeated swings in market judgment, Gerovich said Strategy has continued increasing its Bitcoin holdings and now owns 843,775 BTC worth more than $50 billion.

When tokens and equity coexist, most of a company’s real cash earnings ultimately accrue to equity holders, meaning token market capitalizations should generally be smaller and market expectations should remain restrained, analyst Ceteris said at a Delphi Digital roundtable, according to Wu Blockchain. Ceteris added the problem is that many projects exploit the ambiguity between the two structures to push token valuations far above appropriate levels. Yan Liberman, co-founder of Delphi Digital, added token structures can be useful when markets are strong, but they can quickly unravel once business conditions deteriorate or shareholders try to cash out.

Tiger Research, an Asia-based Web3 research and consulting firm, said in a report that competition over AI agent wallets is aimed less at immediate profits and more at securing an early lead in the future AI payments market. Tiger Research said AI would need dedicated wallets capable of repeatedly processing micropayments and automatically transferring funds based on preset conditions if it is to purchase goods and information on behalf of people. The firm analyzed that major crypto companies including Coinbase and Binance are developing wallets for AI use, and Coinbase’s revenue could expand to about seven times its current level if AI agent adoption takes off in earnest. It added that accumulated payment records in such wallets could be used to assess the profitability of AI agents and expand into financial services such as lending. Still, the firm noted that payment errors by AI, differences in regulations across countries and companies, and unclear legal liability remain major challenges.

German crypto asset manager DDA (Deutsche Digital Assets) said Bitcoin’s governance structure is one reason advances in quantum computing could pose a threat to the network. DDA said financial institutions such as JPMorgan could shift to quantum-resistant cryptography through board approval and budget execution alone, while Bitcoin would require consensus among participants worldwide. DDA added decentralized networks may adopt quantum-resistant cryptography more slowly than traditional financial institutions, and said this reflects not so much a weakness in Bitcoin as a need to take its governance process seriously.

Bitcoin has entered an undervalued zone, but the capitulation typically seen at cycle bottoms has yet to emerge, on-chain analyst Axel Adler Jr said on X. Adler said the MVRV Z-score, a metric used to assess oversold and overbought conditions, fell to 0.42, around four times lower than its historical average of 1.7, but remained above zero. BTC’s seven-day realized profit and loss turned positive from negative, indicating on-chain selling pressure has eased. He said the market has entered a stabilization phase while undervalued, but clear bottom signals and the demand needed to drive a fresh upswing are still lacking.
