South Korea’s government plans to explicitly classify virtual assets such as Bitcoin acquired through donations or criminal asset forfeitures as state assets and, in principle, auction them off immediately after acquisition, Chosun Biz reported. The government on Aug. 6 announced a broad overhaul of the state asset management system, according to the report. As of April, the central government held about 78 billion won ($56.3 million) in virtual assets. Authorities are also reviewing legal grounds for entrusting those assets to private exchanges and for recovering assets held on overseas exchanges and in electronic wallets, while allowing split auctions if a full sale raises concerns about market disruption.

U.S. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren said the U.S. government needs to explain why it eased AI semiconductor export policy toward the United Arab Emirates after World Liberty Financial, or WLFI, received investment from the UAE, Cointelegraph reported. Warren said WLFI received a $500 million investment in January from an Abu Dhabi-based company, while UAE-linked firm MGX deployed a $2 billion investment in Binance using WLFI stablecoin USD1. Warren argued President Donald Trump’s business interests in crypto are affecting government agencies and even national security, and said the matter requires an investigation.

Domestic crypto trading volume fell last month to its lowest level since October 2020, according to a Business Watch report. Combined trading volume at South Korea’s five largest exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax — totaled $28.77 billion (41.0649 trillion won) last month, Business Watch said. Volume has declined for five straight months from $85.5 billion in February, with last month’s figure down about 39% from the previous month. The report cited weaker investor sentiment amid falling cryptocurrency prices as the main reason for the decline, while also pointing to capital flows into South Korea’s stock market and overseas exchanges. By exchange, South Korean exchange Upbit accounted for 63.85% of the total with $18.37 billion in volume, while Bithumb made up 29.44% with $8.47 billion.

Coldcard hackers are attempting to launder stolen Bitcoin, but the transfers remain visible on-chain, Bitcoin News reported. The 1,159 BTC stolen in the Coldcard hack has effectively been frozen and not converted into cash, although a hacker who took about 64 BTC moved the funds to a mixing protocol. Of that amount, 10 BTC was mixed first, while the remaining 54 BTC was split into 7 BTC chunks and is undergoing additional mixing steps. Because Bitcoin consists of unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs, moving funds in smaller increments makes them harder to trace. Bitcoin News added, "At this scale, unusually large transfers are not difficult to track. The laundering attempt is unfolding in a relatively transparent manner."
