AlipayHK, the Hong Kong version of Alipay, one of China’s biggest payment service providers, has been authorized to expand its businesses from the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao) to cover the whole country, Ant Financial Services Group, operator of Alipay and an affiliate of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, announced Sunday on July 21.
“We are the very first Hong Kong digital wallet to offer nationwide services in China; Hong Kong users are able to travel in the mainland of China just with a smartphone,” said the Alipay HK’s team.
With AlipayHK, users can not only make an online payment instantly but also make a blockchain-based cross-border remittance, purchase an insurance service, collect stamps for various goods, etc.
The payment company is reportedly working with the Hong Kong government to enable Alipay’s QR payment service in local subway stations, expected to come true next year.
According to Xinhua News Agency, merchants in the Greater Bay Area started to accept payments through AlipayHK only until January this year, yet AlipayHK’s user count has surpassed 2,000,000 as of now, with its retail partners crossing the 50,000 mark.
